| The old streetlamp stands at the western end of the Panagia district, near one of the entrances to the old walled city from the modern city centre. This the oldest part of Kavala, near the Imaret and the area once occupied by the ancient sanctuary of the city's patron goddess Parthenos (see History of Kavala). Behind the lamp is one of the surviving stretches of the walls which once completely enclosed the Panagia peninsula. One of the old windows still overlooks the main harbour, and around it are the stones of what was once an arched gateway. The city only expanded beyond the walled confines of the citadel after Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz I gave permission for building outside the walls in 1864. |
