Although what remains of the Red Basilica is today a total ruin, the sheer size and thickness of the massive walls still impress, especially when you stand directly under them.
Somebody, somewhere is bound to have calculated how many bricks, tons of clay, mortar and marble, and how many litres of water and man-hours went into to building this monster building. Others are sure to be trying to imagine how the sacred precinct, temple and other buildings originally appeared in all their former glory, with gleaming coloured marble facades, statues and other rich adornments. |
