Bergama: the north rotunda of the Red Basilica, which now houses the Kurtuluş Camii mosque. |
The entrance to the tiny Kurtuluş Camii mosque is on the north side of the rotunda (on the left in his photo) outside the fenced-off area of the Red Basilica archaeological site. The mosque can be visited for free, though non-Muslims should avoid prayer times. Sometimes it is locked.
To the right of the front door of the mosque is an ancient marble wall decorated with a bas-relief of flowers in vases standing in a row of arches. In front of this wall are water taps and seats for worshippers to wash their hands and feet before entering the mosque to pray.
See information and the history of this ancient Roman temple complex on gallery 1, page 27. |
