Marble capital of an Ionic column decorated with bulls' heads, 4-14 AD. |

including opening times, see page 4: sightseeing in Selçuk. |
|
This is one of several column capitals on display in a courtyard of the Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selçuk. The capital look very much like those of conventional Ionic columns (see for example Athens Acropolis gallery, page 12) except that a sculpture of a bull's head has been added to the volutes (scrolls) on either side.
There was no label to inform the visitor about the capital, but it is one of the better preserved capitals from the central aisle of the Basilica Stoa (11 AD) in the Upper Agora of Ephesus. You can see a photo of the other surviving capitals at the remains of the Basilica Stoa on Ephesus gallery page 7.
Inv. No. 1621. Height 43.5 cm. |
