Statue of a young woman inside the entrance to the Genoese fortress on Güvercin Ada (Pigeon Island). |
I never did find out the story of this statue or whether it is a genuine ancient sculpture. A local told me he thought it was the Virgin Mary, but it definitely appears to be a pagan work of late antiquity, probably of the Roman period. Whoever she is, she looks quite charming and graceful.
She used to stand in this window niche just inside the main gate of the fortress, above the stairway up to the inner courtyard (now converted to a park). Whether she will still be there when the fortress finally reopens is anybody's guess. |
