The east side of the Lower (Commercial) Agora, Ephesus. |
|
View southwards. In the background, left, is the Gate of Mazeus and Mithridates, the top of facade of the Library of Celsus and the lower slope of Mount Koressos (Bülbül Daği, Nightingale Mountain).
The rows of columns mark the colonnades of the stoas (covered walkways) in front of the shops around the marketplace. The remains of the shops along the east side of the market square can be seen in the bottom left of the photo, and the shops on the south side run to the right of the Mazeus and Mithridates Gate. |
