The enormous marble basin set up as a baptismal font in the Aghia Maria Church, Ephesus. |

The Aghia Maria (Church of the Virgin)
Part 2
The colossal marble basin was discovered in the Upper Agora of Ephesus by the British architect and archaeologist John Turtle Wood (1821-1890) who was the first to excavate Ephesus 1863-1874. Made of a single piece of stone, it has a diameter of 15 feet (457.2 cm), and the water was 9 inches (22.8 cm) deep at the lowest point (see drawing below). A water-pipe and the remains of a reservoir were found nearby, but there was no hole in the centre, as there would have been in a fountain. |
