Introduction to the Northern Aegean islands |

The Northern Aegean islands form the northernmost group of Greek islands. Since they are spread so widely over a large area of the northeastern Aegean Sea and have such different characters, they do not lend themselves so easily to general descriptions as other archipeligos such as the Dodecanese or Cyclades. With the exception of Lesbos, they also attract fewer tourists.
Most of the islands belong politically to the North Aegean Region (Περιφέρεια Βορείου Αιγαίου), one of the 13 administrative regions of Greece. The islands include:
Agios Efstratios, Chios, Fournoi Korseon, Ikaria,
Lemnos, Lesbos, Oinousses, Psara and Samos
Other islands which belong geographically to the group are:
Thasos, the most northern island, just south of Kavala, and Samothraki (Samothrace) are part of the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace, which is part of the larger semi-autonomous Macedonia Region. However, we have included our guide to Samothraki in the Northern Aegean section.
Gökçeada (Imbros) and Bozcaada (Tenedos), formerly Greek islands, are now part of the Çanakkale province of Turkey. |
