Chora panorama, Samothraki island, Greece at My Favourite Planet

Chora, Samothraki. View across the village to the 15th century Gateluzzi tower.

Samothraki's ancient capital Chora (Χώρα) sits on the steep slopes of a natural ampithreatre. The rocks and soil above the village seem to threaten to fall on the small houses at any moment.

The name Chora (or Hora, Xora) simply means village, a name found throughout Greece, especially as the generic name for a local capital. As on Samothraki, most main settlements where built away from the coast, preferably on higher ground, in a position defensible from pirates and other invaders from the sea. In the case of invasion, inhabitants of the harbours and fishing villages would have to get away as best they could to find refuge in the chora. In modern times, with less danger from the sea, the capital of many islands has moved from the old choras down to the coast.
