Chora, Samothraki. Ready for dinner - the quiet before the storm. |

Having laid all the tables, swept the decks and polished the cutlery, this member of the taverna crew, in his frehly-ironed blue shirt and crisp black trousers, takes a short break before the evening's onslaught begins.
From around 8 pm hundreds of hungry people will descend upon this restaurant to eat, drink and make merry under the stars, with a view of the Thracian Sea below, and Chora's pictureque houses and floodlit 15th century Gateluzzi tower above.
More accurately, most of his guests will ascend here from the hotels and guest houses of Samothraki's modern main port of Kamariotissa on the north coast. After a hectic day of frying on the beaches and playing tavli, Greek holiday-makers will try to find a parking space among Chora's narrow streets and expect to be served, fed and entertained until midnight and beyond. They will not be disappointed - people like the man in this photo will see to it that all have a jolly good time. His feet may ache, and right now his mind may be more on getting his boat painted, but when you arrive you will be assured of his every attention. Yiamas! |
