Pella Archaeological Museum. Statuettes of the Greek goddess Aphrodite. |
|
The Pella Archaeological Museum contains a number of excellent statuettes, including these terracotta figures of the goddess Aphrodite (Ἀφροδίτη, Roman equivalent Venus), the Greek goddess of love and the epitome of female beauty.
The statuette in the centre, made at the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 2nd century BC, depicts a nude Aphrodite removing her sandal, a subject popular into Roman times. In several surviving staues of this type, the goddess is shown bending and standing on her right leg. With her left hand she leans on an idol (a herm or a statue of a deity, often Priapus), while with her right hand she unbinds the sandal on her raised right foot, which is often shown supported by a tiny Eros (Cupid).
