Pella Archaeological Museum. Marble grave stele from the east cemetery of Pella. Early 4th century BC. |
|
The style of the relief, particularly the treatment of the figures, their poses and the folds of their garments, shows the influence of Classical period grave steles of Attica, the most well-known of which are those from the cemetery of Kerameikos in Athens.
The dead woman, seated right, looks up to her mourning servant or relative, who stands close behind her holding a baby. The face of the infant appears to have adult masculine features. |
