| These tiny wooden fishing boats, hardly bigger than the type of rowing boat you may find in your local park, chug around the coast in search of a catch. With the makeshift cover for the diesel engine and the box containing a radio taking up much of the centre of the boat, there is just enough room for a fisherman to steer and work his net. Not much space for comfort on this spartan model. |

Festooned fishing boat.
This model is a couple of classes up from the one above. It has a small deck and cabin,
a mast and sail, and even decorative wooden safety rails. It may be more stylish,
but still, hardly a luxurious way to travel.
In the background is the long quay used by ferries and larger boats, built in the
19th century over the ancient mole constructed by Polykrates in the 6th century BC. |
