| Once you get off the busy main streets of Chora, things get much more tranquil and picturesque. The sidestreets, some of them quite steep, lead out to the farmhouses and fields on the edge of the village. During siesta time in summer there is hardly a soul to be seen. |

It has been said that Samos has no particular architectural style of its own. This is due to the fact that most of the original Samians fled the island around 1475 because of attacks by pirates and other enemies, and was repopulated from the 16th century by the Ottoman Turks with settlers from other parts of Greece who rebuilt old villages and founded new ones. The newcomers built their houses in the styles of their original homes.
I wonder who built this house and in which (or whose) tradition? I also imagine that it must be very pleasant to sit at this table in the evening and greet other villagers as they pass by. |
