Fishing has lost its importance as a source of food and income for the villagers as tourism has grown. Now that most of the main part of Kokkari's harbour has been taken over by restaurants, most of the local fishing boats have been relegated to the east side of the bay.
The blue and white motorbike is a "papaki" (παπάκι, little duck - after the quacking sound of their engines), the affectionate Greek name for the popular Honda 50. Also available as 70cc and 100cc versions, as well as models produced by other manufacturers, these robust bikes were functionally more like donkeys than ducks, and were very popular in the Mediterranean countries and in Asia for carrying upto three people (not recommended) and all kinds of goods and chattels.
Whatever you do, don't refer to them as "mopeds" or "scooters", their owners can be very sensitive. |
