Paleopolis Museum Samothraki. Marble winged Nike akroterion from the Hieron, around 120-100 BC. |
|
This was the third Nike statue found at the Sanctuary of the Great Gods (see gallery page 8). It was discovered by the American archaeologists of New York University in 1949, carefully buried 9 metres north of the southwestern corner of the Hieron. [1]
The life-sized statue was the southwestern of four akroteria sculptures which decorated each of the four corners of the roof of the Hieron.
The winged figure, made of Proconnesian marble [2], wears a chiton, with a himation draped over the lower body, and a sandal on her left foot. Her right arm was raised, and in her left hand she may have held a phiale (libation bowl).
It is thought that the statue was damaged in the first century BC and replaced by the Nike statue now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

2. Nike Akroterion marble
The statue has often been described as being made of Parian marble. However, recent analysis has proved that the marble came from the island of Proconnesos (today Marmara, Turkey). See the note on gallery page 18. |
