The Chapel of the Holy Cross in the inner courtyard of the Monastery of Saint John. |

The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian
(Η Μονή του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Θεολόγου)
The exposed stonework of the chapel and other buildings of the monastery appears very rustic, but is more likely the ingenious recyling of well-cut but damaged stones from much older buildings. The marble of the doorway and window frame, for example, are irregularly shaped and the courses of the walls have been filled in with smaller pieces of stone.
It is known that the monastery was built over the site of an ancient sanctuary and temple of Artemis and that there were many other pagan temples and other buildings here in antiquity, very few remnants of which have yet been discovered or identified.
See gallery page 22 for further details about the monastery and opening times. |
