The main entrance to Stageira archaeological site, on the Olympiada to Stratoni road. |
|
Ancient Stageira archaeological site: open 8.30 am - 9 pm. Entrance free.
See directions to the main entrance from Olympiada village on gallery page 2.
Just a few hundred metres outside Olympiada village, along the southbound road to Stratoni (15 km), a track to the left leads up to the main entrance gate of Stageira archaeological site. |

This sign in Greek stands just before the main entrance to the archaeological site.
|
There is also a large white notice board with official information in Greek about the site, and the cooperation and funding of the European Union.
As at too many ancient sites in Greece and other countries, the closer you get to the place you want to get to, the scarcer the signs become. Considering the number and size of signs in Olympiada village (see gallery pages 2-3), near the entrance itself clear directions are absent. You could completely miss the entrance, especially if you are travelling from the south.
If you are travelling by car, we would advise against parking on the side of the road (no parking space!) or on the track to the entrance, which is used for access by people working at the site. It is safer to leave your vehicle in Olympiada village. If you have any doubts, ask the friendly staff at Hotel Germany, who will give you advice. |

The main gates at the entrance to the site are often closed, and you may be forgiven for thinking that the site is also closed. There is a smaller
gateway to the left of these gates which is not visible from the road.
Don't abandon hope, enter here. |
|
This small building site just inside the main entrance to the archaeological site is a bit of a mystery. Are they reconstructing an ancient building or putting up
a ticket office? There was nobody around to answer this question.
Entrance to the site is currently free of charge, which is marvellous. It is also completely devoid of security guards, which is refreshing.
But seeing this construction, I wondered whether things are about to change... |
