A church in Chora, Samos. |
|
Many of the churches in the villages of Samos were built in the 19th and 20th centuries, when narrrow streets were already occupied by houses and other buildings. They therefore had to be designed to fit small areas and have relatively small churchyards. This often makes the buildings themselves difficult to view as a whole, and even nore difficult to photograph, surrounded as they are by houses, trees, cars and street architecture (street lamps, etc.).
As mentioned on the previous page, there is very little information available about many of the churches of Samos, even at the villages at which they are located.
There are two websites covering churches in Samos:
The Orthodox World, www.orthodox-world.org (in English), has basic information about Orthodox churches, chapels, monasteries and related institutions worldwide, including 5172 in Greece. Of the 135 buildings in Samos, 3 are in Vathy, 11 in Karlovasi, 1 in Kokkari and 3 in Chora. Currently the information is limited to the archdiocese and diocese to which they belong, the name of the local priest, the postcode and telephone number.
www.imsamou.gr (in Greek and English) is the website of the Metropolis of Samos, Ikaria and Korseoi. Unfortunately, it currently displays only a list of its churches with telephone numbers with no further information. Many pages show only a message like "No information in this category".
Other Samos churches featured in this gallery:
Church of the Transfiguration, in the Castle of Logothetis, Pythagorio
Panagia Spiliani Monastery, Pythagorio
Kimisi Theotokou Church (Dormition), Kokkari
Agios Nikolaos Church, Kokkari
Kimisi Theotokou Church (Dormition), Karlovasi
Agios Nikolaos Church, Karlovasi |

A gilded angel (cherubim or seraphim; χερουβείμ, σεραφείμ) decorates a window of the church in the photo above. The winged figure is flanked by two dog-like fabulous creatures, and above
it is a dove as the symbol of the Holy Spirit. This type of image is found in churches dating back to Byzantine times, including the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. |
