The interior of the Byzantine tower built into the Hellenistic building on the North Hill of Stageira. |
|
The tower was built during the Middle Byzantine period (10-11th centuries AD) with stone taken from more ancient buildings. Its walls still stand to around 2 metres high.
On the left of the photo, part of a ancient rectangular marble mosaic floor can be seen (see below). In the centre of the mosaic floor is a rectangular space thought to have been occupied by a 6th century BC altar (see below). The floor of the tower's interior is littered with large stones, one of which (centre of the photo) seems far too large to have been used in the masonry. |

The term mosaic here refers to a surface covered with pieces of stone set into earth or some kind of cement. This ancient paving technique was to
develop into the art of pictorial mosaics, known as "the Greek art", during
Classical and Hellenistic times.
