The 15th century Orta Camii mosque in the centre of Veria. |
|
While looking at this mosque, a local told me that it had originally been a church. I was not sure whether this was his personal opinion or a locally held belief. In many places in the Balkans one hears stories of ancient churches taken over by the Ottoman Turks and converted to mosques. Perhaps this 15th century Muslim place of worship was built on the site of an older church, or was constructed with material from one.
Like the Sinan Tuzci Hamam (see next page), the mosque is a square building, surmounted by an octogonal tower with a domed roof. A simple but robust construction.
Unlike the hamam, the mosque has been built of solid blocks of stone. The doorways and windows have pointed brick arches, and postholes to support the roof of a porch can be seen high along the wall.
Typically, a mosque would have a paved courtyard and a fountain at which the faithful could wash their hands and feet before entering the building to pray. These features have appeared. |
