"Parekklesion Agioy Nikolloy (S)Frantzi" |
This tiny chapel of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas of Myra) is outside the town hall on the main street of Veria.
Such roadside chapels or shrines are common in Greece. Many are donated to the Greek Orthodox Church by private patrons, either in commemoration of a dead relative or as thanks for heavenly interventions, and are usually dedicated to a particular saint.
They always remind me of holy phone boxes, or kiosks for spiritual needs, rather like the Greek peripteros (see previous page) cater for worldly wants.
