A Greek Orthodox roadside shrine outside Olympiada village, Halkidiki, Macedonia, Greece at My Favourite Planet

A rustic shrine outside Olympiada, on the path to Stageira.
This shrine is a more humble construction than the one on the previous page. It is basically an open metal box on a pole, with a simple roof. Among the weathered icons stands a plastic soda bottle holding oil for the shrine's simple lamp.

Roadside shrines in Greece are donated by normal people, often as a memorial to a dead relative, who may have died at that spot on the road, or at sea. Victims of road accidents are remembered, and it is always sobering to see one of theses shrines as you drive along Greece's perilous roads.

The shrine is on the left (seaward side) as you follow the path from Olympiada to the northwest side of the Liotopi peninsula on which the ancient city of Stageira stands.
