The interior of the stoa at Stageira's agora. |

The eight-column colonnade along the centre of the stoa.
|
The colonnade of eight columns, only the foundations of which have survived, ran the length of the cente of the stoa. Stone benches were built along the back and side walls (see also next page).
To the right of the photo, the "living rock" over which the stoa was built, can be seen on the floor. As discussed on gallery page 20, the Stageirites removed or flattened protruding rock with hammer and chisel to make a level base for their buildings.
How the stoa was decorated is matter of speculation. Stoas from the Classical era in other Greek cities contained statues and had walls painted with mythological and historical scenes related to the city's foundation and past. Since there are no surviving ancient literary sources concerning life in Stageira, one can only guess what went on in this stoa. Its long, narrow plan (26 x 6 metres) would have hindered discussion at assemblies and other gatherings here. Likewise, the central colonnade meant that speakers or performers would have to stand in front of the columns to be seen by an audience seated on the benches. |
