The benches in the stoa look as though they would be comfortable enough for a long council session, provided that cushions were supplied. Anybody who has attended a performance in an ancient marble theatre knows that often you have to bring your own. Without a cushion Aeschylus and Euripides can become literally a pain the backside.
The stoa was built mostly of well-cut marble blocks arranged in regular layers, using the "pseudoisodomo" technique. The pristine-looking white blocks on the top of the walls are modern stones added during restoration work. |
