The foundation of an altar in the agora of Stageira. |
|
The altar stood in front of the agora's stoa, just to its left (west). It is not known to which deity the altar was dedicated. In the ancient world religious beliefs were an integral part of all aspects of daily life, including politics and shopping. Cities, trades and professions had their patron gods, who were regularly worshipped and offered sacrifices, and it is very likely that Stageira's agora was adorned with several such altars and sacred statues, though not on the same grand scale as in larger cities such as Athens or Ephesus.
Following the recent archaeological excavations and restoration work at Stageira's agora, rows of wooden stakes were hammered into the ground around the small areas of exposed ancient foundations such as these and the Archaic remains (see next page). This is more visitor-friendly way of marking off such remains than fences and barriers. Still, it may be difficult to work out what these remains actually represent, and therefore we recommend that on your visit you take along a copy of the booklet "Ancient Stageira, the birthplace of Aristotle" by archaeologist Dr. Kostas Sismanidis, available free in Olympiada (see gallery page 1 for further details). |

The altar foundations in the agora from the front.
Such remains may not seem very interesting to most people: they are neither grand nor particularly beautiful in themselves; just a bunch of
old stones. It takes the archaeologist's trained eye to recognize what they are, their possible age and significance. Sometimes this recognition
may take years or even decades, as the complex pieces of the puzzle in such a long lost-city are painstakingly uncovered and assessed. |
