Detail of the Abduction of Helen mosaic floor, Pella archaeological site, Macedonia, Greece at My Favourite Planet

Pella Archaeological site. Detail of the Abduction of Helen mosaic floor, 4th century BC.

The "House of the Abduction of Helen" (also known as House 1.5 of Block 5 of the city) is named after this enormous floor mosaic, 8.48 x 2.84 metres, the largest ancient mosaic yet discovered in Europe, which is still in its original position in the archaeological site, at the north side of the house. It was unearthed in 1961, around the same time as the Stag Hunt mosaic in the next room east of it. These works are thought to have been made later than those in the "House of Dionysos" (see gallery page 2) using more advanced styles and techniques.

The dramatic subject of the mosaic is the mythical abduction (or rape) of Helen (later to be known as Helen of Troy) by the Athenian hero Theseus. As he forces Helen to board his waiting chariot she calls to her fleeing female companion Deianeera for help. The name of the four characters in the scene are written close to each head. In the photo above, the driver of the four-horse chariot is named as Phorbas (ΦΟΡΒΑΣ).
