Stageira's agora (marketplace) occupied what is now this large open space at the bottom of the valley between the city's two hill, in the centre of the Liotopi peninsula (see gallery page 22 for further details).
On the left of the photo, behind the tree, the modern wooden steps climb the bank to what is the main pathway through the centre of the city. To the left, the path leads eastwards around the North Hill then up to the long south wall and acropolis of the city. To the right it leads in the opposite direction down towards the northwest entrance of the archaeological site.
On the right of the photo are the remains of 6th century BC Archaic buildings and monuments (see photo below). In the background, one of east Halkidiki's mountains rises above the Strymonic Gulf. |

Directly in front of the stoa of the agora are the remains of Archaic structures
from the 6th century BC, one circular (top of photo) and two rectagular in
plan, near which other Archaic remains, including what are thought to have
been foundations of monuments, have also been found. |
