Saint Paul the Apostle holding a sword and a bundle of scripture rolls. |
This part of the monument looks like a cross between an altar and a gravestone. |
This part of Veria's monument / shrine to Saint Paul the Apostle, made of marble and mosaic, shows a rather grim-looking Christ (see below) and Paul.
In his right hand Paul holds a downward-pointing sword by its hilt. This could be a reference to Christ's announcement that "I came with the sword", to martyrdom and to the Last Judgement.
In his left hand he holds a bundle of scrolls, presumably his letters and writings, which were included in the New Testament. |
Mosaic of Christ the Pantocrator on the Monument to Saint Paul the Apostle. Like Paul, Christ looks very grim in this portayal. |

Mosaic of Saint Paul on a dedicatory insciption of the Saint Paul Monument. |
