|The hamam (Turkish bath) and a disused water fountain near the Knights' Castle.
|The tiny hamam (Turkish bath) was built during the Turkish Ottoman occupation of Kastellorizo 1512-1913. It stood within the castle fortifications which enclosed the north of the Kavos headland east of the main harbour. Whether it was used generally by the island's population or only by the Turkish soldiers stationed here is unknown. Normally in the Mulsim world, a hamam is built as part of a group of three buildings alongside a mosque and a bakery. But if there was also a mosque here has is long been destroyed along with most of the surrounding buildings.
Today the hamam seems to be used as an impromptu storage shed. The walls have been daubed by French graffiti in green paint.
In the foreground of the photo above is a small stone water fountain. There are several of these around Kastellorizo, most still equipped with a water tap. But be warned: none of them work. If you are walking around the island it is advisable to take your own water, as there is no surface water and nowhere to obtain any beyond the main settlement.
