|The old windmill near the Knights' Castle.
|This 18th century windmill was in operation until the early 20th century. Today, it stands among the ruins of buildings destroyed in July 1944 when a fire at a fuel dump spread to an arsenal and destroyed half of the island's homes. One of the ruins was once the primary school for the Turkish children on the island.
The windmill's stone structure is in good condion, although the wooden ceiling are roof are slowly rotting away. Inside there is a large old stone, which was either a millstone or a pivot for the mill's wooden machinery.
Windmills were built around the Mediterranean from the 16th century, and at the time were part of a technological revolution, providing farmers with a more efficient and effective way of grinding down grain for flour. Some mill-owners, particularly those who owned more than one mill, became prosperous businessmen. Since there appears to have been only one windmills on Kastellorizo, and there was insufficient land for grain production here, it must have been used for milling imported grain for local use.
See other old windmills on Samos and Patmos.
