The belltower stands on the southwest side of a precinct, enclosed by a low wall and iron railings, which includes the church of Agios Konstantinos kai Eleni (Saints Constantine and Helena), built 1835, the Parthenagogeion (girls' school, left of the belltower), built 1905, and the Santrapé Town School for boys, built 1903. The Santrapé school now educates all the island's children, of which there are sadly only few.
The central square of the precinct, known as the Avlogyro, has a typically Dodecanese choklakia mosaic floor ( see gallery page 234). Most of the island's christenings, weddings and funerals are conducted here, and before and after the services the Avlogyro is lively and full of people.
