|Horafia district: monument to Despina Achladiotou, "The Lady of Ro" (1898 - 1982).
Despina Achladiotou (Δέσποινα Αχλαδιώτου, 1898-1982), "The Lady of Ro" (η Κυρά της Ρω), is Kastellorizo's greatest heroine. She and her husband farmed and kept goats on the nearby island of Ro (Greek Ρω). She refused to leave the island even after the death of her husband and defiantly raised the Greek flag every day from 1927 to 1961, even throughout the Italian Fascist occupation of the Dodecanese. She is buried on Ro, which can be visited by one of the local cruise boats (see page 4: activities on Kastellorizo).
